Job Description

Airbnb is looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer (Quality), Payments to strengthen the quality, reliability, and scalability of one of the world's largest global payment platforms. This position offers the opportunity to work on systems responsible for processing billions of dollars across multiple countries, currencies, payment methods, and financial partners.

The engineer joining this team will play an important role in improving product quality through modern automation practices instead of relying only on traditional manual testing. The position requires close collaboration with software engineers, product managers, platform engineers, and release teams to ensure every payment feature reaches production with confidence.

Unlike traditional QA positions, this role combines software engineering principles with quality engineering. Candidates are expected to write production-quality automation code, improve testing infrastructure, participate in technical discussions, and contribute toward building highly testable systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design scalable automation solutions for payment products.
  • Develop reliable automated test suites for backend services and APIs.
  • Improve automation coverage for new features and existing products.
  • Build reusable testing utilities and internal automation libraries.
  • Participate in architecture discussions to improve system testability.
  • Review technical designs from a quality engineering perspective.
  • Collaborate with developers throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Work closely with CI/CD teams to integrate automated testing pipelines.
  • Ensure every release passes required quality gates before deployment.
  • Identify product defects before production release.
  • Perform root cause analysis for production issues.
  • Debug complex automation failures efficiently.
  • Validate bug fixes using repeatable automation approaches.
  • Improve regression testing strategies.
  • Reduce manual testing effort by increasing automation coverage.
  • Maintain stable automation frameworks across multiple releases.
  • Continuously optimize execution speed of automated pipelines.
  • Support multiple global engineering teams working across different time zones.
  • Maintain high engineering standards while delivering quality software.

What You Will Build

As part of Airbnb Payments, your work directly impacts millions of users who rely on secure payment processing every day. The engineering team manages highly scalable systems supporting multiple payment providers, international currencies, compliance requirements, and global financial regulations.

You will contribute toward building automation systems capable of validating complex payment workflows under different business scenarios. These systems help ensure reliable guest payments, host payouts, refunds, cancellations, and financial transactions across Airbnb's global marketplace.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate enjoys solving engineering problems through automation rather than repetitive manual testing. They understand software architecture, can read production code comfortably, and know how to design maintainable automation frameworks.

Successful candidates usually have experience writing clean code, understanding distributed systems, integrating testing into continuous delivery pipelines, and collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams.

Why This Role Matters

Payments represent one of the most business-critical areas within Airbnb. Even small software defects can affect customer trust, financial accuracy, and platform reliability. By building intelligent automation systems, this role helps maintain the stability and performance of Airbnb's worldwide payment ecosystem while enabling faster feature delivery.

Expected Interview Questions

  1. Explain your experience with software test automation.
  2. How do you design a scalable automation framework?
  3. Difference between integration testing and system testing.
  4. Explain API automation testing.
  5. What makes a good automation test?
  6. Explain Page Object Model.
  7. How do you reduce flaky test cases?
  8. Explain CI/CD integration for automation.
  9. How do Jenkins pipelines execute automated tests?
  10. What is regression testing?
  11. Explain Git workflow.
  12. Describe a difficult production bug you solved.
  13. Explain synchronization issues in automation.
  14. Difference between smoke testing and sanity testing.
  15. Explain REST API testing.
  16. What are HTTP status codes?
  17. Explain SQL joins used during testing.
  18. Difference between unit testing and integration testing.
  19. Explain DSA concepts used in automation.
  20. Why do you want to join Airbnb?

Skills Explanation

Airbnb expects engineers who combine strong software development knowledge with quality engineering expertise.

Programming knowledge in languages like Java, Python, or TypeScript allows engineers to build maintainable automation frameworks instead of relying on record-and-playback tools. Strong understanding of Data Structures and Algorithms helps in writing optimized automation utilities and solving complex engineering problems during interviews.

Knowledge of CI/CD platforms such as Jenkins, Buildkite, or Spinnaker ensures automated tests run continuously during every deployment. Engineers should also understand Git version control, API testing, debugging techniques, software architecture, and modern testing methodologies.

Communication is equally important because this role involves regular collaboration with global engineering teams, product managers, and developers working across multiple regions
